Self-Advocacy in Healthcare: A Seminar for Black & Gender Sexual Minorities

Join us for "Self-Advocacy in Healthcare: A Seminar for Black & Gender Sexual Minorities" hosted by Regine, Daniel, and Iman. We're proud to team up with @atlantapride to offer this free educational seminar as part of Atlanta Pride 2021.

Seminar description: Black sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) face health disparities because of systemic oppression and discrimination. Historically, when engaging in help-seeking, the services that queer and trans Black people receive in healthcare settings are discriminatory. Examples of the current issues are both at the systems level (e.g., lack of insurance coverage for trans-affirming care, disparities in income) and individual level (e.g., discrimination, racism, transphobia, homophobia). These beliefs from medical professionals can negatively affect the treatment of Black queer and trans individuals.

Therefore, it is important to provide Black queer and trans individuals resources and information to advocate for their care in all parts of the medical system (i.e., physical health, mental health). Workshop facilitators will provide information on patient rights, disability accommodations, how to file a complaint, and more. Additionally, resources will be provided to participants at the end of the workshop for patient advocacy and queer and trans-affirming anti-racist services and supports. Participants in this workshop will be able to use this information provided to better advocate for their health needs in the future with a focus on mental health.
